The great naval powers of the age of fighting sail used their fleets to enforce their foreign policy, defend their homeland, and protect their maritime commerce. When the interests of these nations came into conflict, so did their navies, and the resulting battles changed the course of history. Battles such as Chesapeake Bay, The Saints and Trafalgar are historical landmarks, and names such as Nelson, Perry, de Grasse, Hood, Suffren and Rodney are immortal in naval history. Salvo is inspired by these battles: the political circumstances that brought them about, the commanders, and the final clash as the fleets engaged.

Salvo is an incredibly engaging game that combines 'Move-and-Shoot' turn based play with both automatic actions and simultaneous resolution. Each of the player's ships can be directly controlled using Salvo's unique 'Action Marker' system, or the ship can be added to a squadron and controlled by the squadron' s objective and formation. These powerful controls and Salvo's fast turn system make each battle as enjoyable as it is beautiful.

The impetus for Salvo's visual presentation is the naval art of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Paintings and engravings inspired by the same historical events provide guidance for Salvo's graphics. All the elements of the game are rendered from 3D with vivid detail and carefully considered color, for the best combination of appearance and playability.

Each scenario in Salvo is also a campaign. After each battle, the player is presented with campaign choices based on the outcome of the past battle. To win the full campaign, the player must not only win the battles, but also make the correct choices between battles.
