The Beast Within is the sequel to Sierra's popular adventure role playing game Gabriel Knight-Sins of the Father. The Beast Within is greatly superior to its predecessor in that the entire game is presented in full motion video. Sierra has chosen to use live actors to play all of the characters in the game. The Beast Within contains a total of five and a half hours of exciting and meaningful full motion video. However, unlike other games such as Phantasmagoria, the Beast Within is more than a digital-movie-extravaganza. Game puzzle are complex and challenging and the story lines are rich and mysterious.
The entire game is set in Germany; Munich and Southern Bavaria and takes place a year after the first Gabriel Knight mystery. Gabriel, a best-selling novelist and adventurer, is in Germany working on his latest novel when he is approached by some locals for his assistance in solving a werewolf related murder. As Schattenjager (doer of good...fighter of evil, shadow hunter etc.), Gabriel agrees to help the locals and begins his research into the murders.
The game is diverse in that the player takes on the role of three unique characters at different points in the game. The characters which you play are: Gabriel Knight, Grace Nakimura, and a werewolf.
The game is made to be very interesting in that the player involvement required to successfully complete the game is substantial. All inventory items must be examined thoroughly (not simply looked at).
All locations must be explored fully and discussions with other characters must never be cut short. Even the transition sequences in the game must be carefully observed in order to obtain valuable hints and clues to the unfolding mystery.
